The Final Word Making the most of a situation Boy is it cold! Our weather this winter has at times hovered at 4 below; Brrrrrr! You know, it's easy to complain, and sometimes even a great way to shoot the breeze (pun intended), But, it gives me pause to ask; are we missing the point? Are we missing out on a growth experience in the process??? I was reminded of this as I watched the travel channel (which I love). The show featured an insiders look at Russia. Their last stop was a town located between Moscow and the North Pole within the Arctic Circle. You can imagine how cold that was. I was impressed with the ability of the town's inhabitants to make the best of the situation. It seemed that they didn't just survive, but they embraced their unique circumstances. Their winter/spring festival (who could tell?) Featured a huge cross country ski race rivaling in number, the New York City marathon, various other activities, eats, reindeer, outdoor concerts, sporting events and what not. The event that caught my attention was the swimming event. No, this was not an Olympic style event at an indoor pool (just in case this question leapt to mind). First they chiseled a hole through what looked to be at least 12" of solid ice, to get through to the unfrozen water below. As they scooped out boulders of broken ice in their newly constructed rectangular "pool", the travel guide remarked on the insane spectacle of watching people dive into freezing water in their underwear as a crowd gathered to witness that very thing. Even though the guide had previously remarked on the mental health (or lack there of) of the event participants, he too got caught up in the moment, saying, as he stepped to the edge of the newly created pool, that this was probably the "most stupid thing he's ever done" he took the dive and swam across to the other side. Talk about Brrrrrrr! Now, that's what I call making the best of a situation. PS: even as I finish this article, I'm thinking about a warm sandy beach. Hey, what can I say, it's a coping mechanism. |
