The Final Word

Don't just imagine the possibilities. . . consider them.

Often when my husband and I are traveling, if it is a place I like, I will check out the real estate market.  It's just something I do.  A sort of 'what if I wanted to live here' scenario.

Like most people, it's not uncommon to find ourselves vacationing at a place near the ocean.  I don't know why as a species, we are drawn to the water, but it does seem to be the case.  One of the most enjoyable experiences to me is to just sit on a deck, overlooking the ocean relaxing to the sights & sounds.  Many is the time I've fantasized about owning a place near the ocean just so I could do that activity (or inactivity as it may be) anytime I wanted.  That being the case, I usually look at the price of homes and condos in these areas when we vacation there.  Sadly, but understandably, ocean side prices on the west coast have been so far out of reach, I never even thought of owning as a possibility and often wondered exactly who could afford those pricey properties.

Then something amazing happened.  I could even call it an epiphany though I didn't recognize it at the time.  We vacationed on the east coast on our way to a business conference.  We happened to stay in Outer Banks, North Carolina.  I fell in love with the charm and natural Oceanside beauty that still exists there.  As is my habit, we passed a model home just 3 blocks from the ocean.  We (or more correctly, I) just had to stop & satisfy my curiosity.  It was a great home, 3 stories with a wonderful ocean view from the top story where a large family room & kitchen were located.  I couldn't believe the asking price.  It was about one tenth the prices we found on the west coast.  Still out of reach but it made me consider the possibility.

It wasn't long after that trip that I started thinking of what it would take in order for us to afford something like that.

I've determined that I will have my place at the beach one day.  I've requested information about numerous beach communities and have even subscribed to the Outer Banks Newspaper just to get a feel for what's happening there.

Even though I had fantasized about sitting on my own deck overlooking the beach, I had never imagined it was attainable.  Until I considered it a possibility, I didn't even look into what it would take to accomplish my dream.

Now I'm taking steps to accomplish my goal.  Upon reflection of this entire process, I've learned what years of reading 'how-to-reach-your-goal' books have never taught me;  I found that I can fantasize and visualize that I've already reached my goal a thousand times.  I can write my goal down in my day planner everyday and read it 5 times a day to keep it fresh in my mind.  I can 'tap into the universal positive energy' bank.  I know that I can and should do all these things when I want to reach a goal.  However, until I saw it . . . until I clearly defined what I wanted to achieve, and knew it as a possible choice . . . I hadn't begun to outline my 'things to do in order to get a beach house list'.

Consider your possibilities.  What do you dream of?  Start with that, define your goal, visualize your goal, and then figure out how to reach it.

Empower yourself!
